Buy White Crested Canary Online. The Crested Canary, (Serinus canaria domesticus), is one of the oldest “type” canaries bred for its striking tufted crest of head feathers, rather than a special song. If you enjoy breeding canaries, this white-crested canary might be an ideal pet canary selection. Shipping is easy, safe, and delivered right to your local post office. Today, the crested canary comes in a multitude of colors and is readily available and appreciated for both its fun looks and great personality. The crested canary can be on the timid side, but does well in either cages or aviaries and can live between 8-12 years with relative ease. True Crested Canaries tend to be quite large on average, compared to their close relative, the Gloster Canary. Breeders continued to work, using the true Crested Canary as a starter for the ultimate development of the smaller but wildly popular Gloster Canary, which also has a well-shaped crest. The true show quality Crested Canary is a larger, somewhat stocky canary. Many pet-quality Crested Canaries may be smaller. Their environment should not be wet, cool, or drafty, and if they are given space to sunbathe, they should also have a shaded area to protect them from too much sun.
Geography: Sometime around 1800, English breeders developed this spectacular bird that proved to be a reliable breeder that could be easily developed into its own “type.”
Size: 5.5 inches in length
Temperament: They are on the timid side and should not be housed together with parakeets, lovebirds, or other parrots that tend to be more aggressive. They like to bathe daily and should be given water to do so. Providing a cage that is at least 24” wide by 18” deep by 24” high is suggested. These birds cannot exercise by climbing. They need to fly, and the cage needs to give them space to do that. They also enjoy perches and toys for amusement and fun. The crested Canaries, like all canaries, must be protected from mosquitoes, and ensure their perches are clean to avoid any foot problems.
Song/ Call: Even though the Crested Canary is a “type” canary bred for looks and not a song, a single male kept as a pet will sing – and often they’ll sing very loudly and quite well. Males should be kept separately to ensure the highest quality and frequency of singing.
Breeding: Birds that express the beautiful crest are called the Crested Canaries, while birds that carry the gene for the crest but don’t have a crest themselves, are more properly called the Crest-bred Canary. To produce strong babies, if one parent is a Crested Canary, the other parent should always be a smooth-headed Crest-bred Canary. The crest-bred Canaries won’t have the crest but when they are paired with a crested mate, they will be able to produce healthy babies– some of them with fine crests. The gene that causes the crested mutation is dominant, but a double dose is lethal. When one gene is inherited, the bird is crested. If two genes are inherited, then the bird’s skull is deformed and the chick usually dies in its shell.
Diet: The Crested Canary have been kept in captivity for hundreds of years, and they thrive on a relatively easy-to-provide seed-based diet. The primary foundation is a good quality Canary Seed formulated especially for pet canaries. Additionally offering some fruit, leafy greens, dried egg mix, supplements of cuttlefish bone, and occasional millet sprays, Australian Blend Goldenfeast provides a balanced diet for the canary.
DNA Testing
If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is ‘monomorphic’, which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee the preferred gender. DNA testing may add 3-6 plus weeks to the estimated delivery time to allow for gender results. See our FAQs for more info.
